Susan (Amy Adamsová) žije v nenaplněném manželství, když dostane od svého bývalého manžela Edwarda (Jake Gyllenhaal) balíček s rukopisem románu. Román je věnován jí, ale jeho obsah je násilný a zdrcující. Susan se nedokáže ubránit vzpomínkám na svou dávnou lásku s autorem. Stále častěji si knihu vykládá jako příběh o pomstě, příběh, který ji nutí přehodnotit rozhodnutí, jež učinila, a znovu v ní probouzí lásku, o níž si myslela, že je dávno ztracená.
