Bernard (Gerard Deparidieu) je šťastně ženatý muž. Ovšem když se do sousedního domu nastěhují manželé Bauchardovi, dostane Bernardův život jiný spád. Ukáže se totiž, že Mathilde Bauchard (Fanny Ardant) je Bernardova dávná milenka… Příběh vášnivé lásky se odehrává v okolí Grenoblu. Bernard a Mathilde se potkali před sedmi lety, bláznivě se do sebe zamilovali, načež nedlouho na to následoval bouřlivý rozchod. Osud je však svede znovu dohromady. Mathilde se spolu se svým novomanželem Philippem nastěhuje do domu hned vedle toho, ve kterém bydlí Bernard se svou manželkou Arlette a synkem Thomasem. Madame Jouve, důvěrnice obou bývalých milenců, jež vede sportovní klub, se stane svědkem toho, když Bernard s Mathilde uzavřou pakt o neútočení. Ovšem jak už to v životě bývá, nakonec tuto dohodu jeden z nich poruší… ovšem který z nich to bude? A jak daleko jsou schopni zajít?
