Dougův šťastný a zcela předvídatelný život se rozpadne na kousíčky, když ho jednoho rána jeho přítelkyně Susan náhle opustí. Oddaný fanoušek skupiny Queen Doug je naprosto zničený a nedokáže si ani představit, co bude dál dělat. Pak se jeho život opět otočí naruby poté, co se ujme opatrovnictví postřeleného kačera, kterého nalezne na střeše svého domu. Poté, co mu přátelé nedokážou poradit, co má dělat a nejlepším jejich nápadem je ho sníst, přestane se Doug litovat a rozhodne se Pierra, jak kačera pojmenuje, uzdravit. Od specialisty na ptactvo zjistí, že Pierre není kačer, ale husice rajská. Je to pták zvyklý žít v páru a potřebuje, aby se o něj někdo staral. Doug se rozhodne, že se ho tedy ujme. Veterinář pro Pierra sežene místo na kachní farmě. Když ho tam Doug odveze a vidí podmínky, ve kterých tam kachny žijí s bláznivou majitelkou, vrátí se pro něj a rozhodne se, že si ho nechá. Všude ho bere s sebou. V zoo, kam se Doug vydá pro radu, jak má s Pierrem žít, poznává krásnou veterinářku Holly. Netrvá dlouho a Doug se do Holly zamiluje. Holly není Doug také lhostejný, ale Hollyin syn Taylor není z Douga příliš nadšený, protože už o jednoho tátu tragicky přišel. Doug si Taylora ale nakonec naprosto získá. Jejich vztah se vyvíjí pěkně, jenže cesty lásky jsou nevyzpytatelné. Najednou se objevuje Susan a chce se k Dougovi vrátit, což se Holly velmi dotkne. Doug si na poslední chvíli uvědomí, že Susan pro něj není ta pravá a že miluje Holly. Ta ho ale nechce vyslechnout, protože ji zradil. Pierre se jednoho dne konečně zase naučí létat a je pryč. Doug se nevzdává. Přijde za Holly na party do zoo, vyzná jí lásku a zase se dají dohromady.
